Franchise History
The Royals were one of four expansion teams to begin play with the 1969 season, along with the Seattle Pilots, Montreal Expos, and San Diego Padres. They replaced the A's, who moved to Oakland after the 1967 season.
In their first season, they finished with a record of 69-93, best of the expansion teams. In 1971, they finished 85-76, which at the time was the quickest an expansion team had reached the .500 plateau.
