Overall Career

Rey Sanchez, after being drafted by the Rangers in 1986, spent 4 years in the Texas system before an off-season trade in 1990 sent him to the Chicago Cubs, where he would make his major league debut in 1991. Sanchez came on as a defensive replacement of a September game against the San Fransisco Giants and was struck out by Dennis Martinez in his first major league at-bat. He would spend six years with the Cubs, with a season high of 428 at-bats in 1995. Sanchez was traded in a waiver wire deal to the New York Yankees in 1997, where he would appear in 38 regular season games and five post-season matches. Rey bounced around for the rest of his career, signing with San Fransisco in 1998 and Kansas City in 1999. He started for the Royals for two years and was traded on the trade deadline of 2001 to the Atlanta Braves, a deal that sent future Red Sox player Alejandro Machado to the Royals. Sanchez was signed by GM Mike Port of the Red Sox in 2002, where he served as the primary started second baseman, splitting time with Lou Merloni. Rey played solid defense for the Sox, committing only three errors in 66 games at 2B. He also helped out some with his bat, hitting a respectable .286. He signed the next year with the New York Mets and was dealt at the deadline by GM Steve Phillips to the Seattle Mariners. After finishing 2003 with the Mariners (hitting .294 in 46 games), he signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 2004. Sanchez would finish his baseball career at the age of 37 in 2005 with the New York Yankees, hitting .279 in 23 games. In 11,461 major league innings, Rey made only 112 errors.

Sanchez caused a minor New York media frenzy while with the Mets in 2003 by allegedly getting a haircut in the clubhouse during a game.[1]

Sanchez's Moment in the Sun

Rey will live on in the memories of Boston Red Sox fans as the guy who fielded the final out of Derek Lowe's no-hitter, recording the assist on a chopper hit by Jason Tyner of the Devil Rays.
