Overall Career

Randy Scott Kutcher (born April 20, 1960 in Anchorage, AK) was a reserve outfielder with the Giants and Red Sox from 1986-1990. In his three seasons with the Sox, he appeared in 159 games, hitting an uninspired .224 with 3 HR and 23 RBI in 246 at-bats. Over the course of his five-year major league career with San Francisco and Boston, Kutcher hit .228 with 10 HR and 40 RBI.

Kutcher's Moments in the Sun

  • Kutcher made his major league debut with the Giants on June 19, 1986, against Eric Show of the Padres. Batting in the leadoff spot, he went 2-5 on the day including a 9th inning solo shot off releiver Craig Lefferts, his first of seven HR on the season. The Giants fell to the Padres 8-3.
  • Kutcher's best game in a Red Sox uniform came at Fenway on July 23, 1989, an 8-2 win over the White Sox behind Roger Clemens. Starting in right field and hitting in the #7 hole, Kutcher went 2-4 with a three-run HR, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Trivia

  • He played his final game with the Sox on September 27, 1990.
  • When he first came to the Red Sox in 1988, Kutcher wore #55 before switching to #5 for the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Though (or perhaps because) he was not fleet of foot (13 SB and 9 CS in his career), some Sox fans took to calling him "Speed Limit" when he first appeared in a Boston uniform.
  • He is one of two players born in Alaska ever to have played for the Boston Red Sox (Curt Schilling).
