Overall Career
Oscar Joseph Vitt was born on January 4, 1890, in San Francisco, CA. Vitt was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 11, 1912, with the Detroit Tigers.
Vitt had a 10-year career as a third baseman. In 1,065 games he batted .238 with 894 hits, 4 HR and 295 RBI. His best success came as a third baseman for the Detroit Tigers. After his playing days he managed the Cleveland Indians from 1938 to 1940. He made a name for himself as a hardnosed skipper in the minor leagues, earning titles in three different leagues. But when he got a chance to manage in the majors with Cleveland in the late 1930s, his methods led to a mutiny by his talented team, and his firing.
