New York City has been the home city for various major league teams in the American League and National League:
- The New York Yankees are current members of the American League East and have been a major league team since 1901. They have previously been known as the New York Highlanders (1903-1912) and the Baltimore Orioles (1901-1902).
- The New York Mets are current members of the National League East and have been a major league team since 1962.
- The San Francisco Giants are current members of the National League West and have been a major league team since 1883. They have previously been known as the New York Gothams (1883-1884) and the New York Giants (1885-1957).
In addition, the following major league teams played in New York State:
- The Los Angeles Dodgers are current members of the National League West and have been a major league team since 1884. They previously played in Brooklyn, most notably as the Brooklyn Dodgers and Brooklyn Robins from 1911-1957.
The New York-Penn League is a minor league at the short season Class-A level.
