History and Planning

The Yankees' desire to move to a new stadium dates back to the 1980s, when George Steinbrenner considered moving the team out of the Bronx to a "safer" area of the New York metropolitan area, perhaps even across the Hudson River to New Jersey. Attendance increased in the 1990s due to the team's success on the field, however, and increased revenues meant better public safety and therefore less reason to move out of the Bronx. Still, the Yankees intended to move to a new ballpark in the area. In 2001, then-outgoing mayor Rudy Giuliani approved plans to build ballparks for both the Yankees and the New York Mets before he left office, but new mayor Michael Bloomberg made it clear that he had other priorities and the new parks would be put on hold. Plans picked up again around 2004, with construction finally commencing in 2006.

Design and Construction

Essentially, the design of the new Yankee Stadium is intended to be pre-renovation Yankee Stadium with more modern amenities. The exterior wall will resemble the pre-renovation wall of Yankee Stadium, and the interior will feature the copper facade that was removed during the renovations in the 1970s. Instead of the seating being stacked as it is at the current Yankee Stadium, it will be spaced outward in a bowl (keeping with the toilet theme), placing most fans further away from the field. There will be fewer bleacher seats than at the current Yankee Stadium, but more standing room. Monument Park will be moved to the new stadium as well.
