Overall Career
Herold Dominic "Muddy" Ruel was born on February 20, 1896, in St. Louis, Missouri. Ruel was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 29, 1915, with the St. Louis Browns.
Ruel had a 19-year career as a catcher. In 1,468 games he batted .275 with 1,242 hits, 4 Hr and 534 RBI. He is best konwn as a the batterymate of the great Walter Johnson when he was with the Senators. He was one of the most durable catchers in American League history and a key figure in the Washington Senator's only world championship. After his playing days, he managed the 1947 St. Louis Browns. In 1946 he became a first assistant to the Commissioner of baseball, Albert B. Chandler.

- Helped the Red Sox turn a triple play on April 28, 1922 against the New York Yankees.
- He caught 13 of Walter Johnson's 110 career shutouts.
- A graduate of the Washington University Law School, Muddy Ruel is the only ballplayer to have taken a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
