Overall Career
"Irish" Mike Ryan was signed as an amareur free agent in 1960 by the Boston Red Sox. He only managed to hit .200 only three times in his 10 full seasons, but was valuable for his defensive ability. The Red Sox traded Ryan and cash to the Philadelphia Phillies for Dick Ellsworth and Gene Oliver. He retired after the 1974 season; after managing and instructing in the minors, he became a Phillies coach in 1980.

Trivia
- At the opening of Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium in 1971, Ryan caught the ceremonial first ball, which was dropped from a helicopter flying above the stadium. He did it again before the Phillies' home openers in 1981, 1991, and 1995. [1]
- Didn't play high school baseball.
- Mike's father, "Cagey" Ryan, kept monkeys as pets.
