Michael Lee Cubbage played Major League Baseball from 1974 until the close of the 1981 season. He was third base coach for the Boston Red Sox under Grady Little from 2002-2003.
Overall Career
He was drafted out of the University of Virginia in 1971 by the Washington Senators. He was called up to the Major League level by the Texas Rangers in 1974 and played there until he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1976. On June 27, 1978 he hit for the cycle against the Toronto Blue Jays. He later signed as a free agent with the New York Mets for the 1981 season. Throughout his playing career, he was considered somewhat of a utility player, playing mostly third base, but with stints at the first base, second base, and designated hitter positions.
In 1991, Cubbage managed the Mets in seven games, finishing with a career managerial record of three wins and four losses (.429).
As a third base coach for the Sox is perhaps most rembered for collapsing due to a seizure in an April 2003 game against the Baltimore Orioles. Cubbage, who is a diabetic, spent a few minutes on the ground before being taken out on a stretcher. It later turned out to be nothing "serious".
Moment in the Sun
- On March 5, 2002 Cubbage was named interim manager following Joe Kerrigan's dismissal. The "Joe Cubbage Era" ended six days later when Grady Little assumed mangerial duties and Cubbage was demoted to third base coach.
Trivia
- Popularized the use of corded glasses amongst third base coaches throughout the league.
