Overall Career

Michael Gary Brown (born March 4, 1959 in Camden County, New Jersey) was a journeyman starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners in the mid-1980s. Over the course of his six major league seasons, he appeared in 61 games, 54 with Boston.

He ended his career 12-20 with a 5.75 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.

Brown's Moment in the Sun

  • Brown's best start in a Boston uniform came on May 7, 1983, at Fenway against Seattle. Mike went the distance in the Sox 8-0 victory, scattering five hits and three walks and striking out two as he registered the only complete game shutout of his career. Tony Armas hit a grand slam in the Sox 5-run seventh and Dwight Evans and Jim Rice added solo shots.

Trivia

  • Brown was drafted out of high school in the 20th round of the 1977 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves, but did not sign, opting to attend Clemson instead.
  • Brown was the first member of the Red Sox to wear #27 after Carlton Fisk's departure for Chicago.
  • Served as Hideki Okajima's pitching coach for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in 2006.
  • Currently a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Transactions

  • June 7, 1977: Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 20th round of the 1977 amateur draft, but did not sign.
  • June 3, 1980: Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 1980 amateur draft.
  • August 22, 1986: Sent to the Seattle Mariners by the Boston Red Sox along with P Mike Trujillo as players to be named later in a trade completed on August 19, 1986. In that trade, the Red Sox sent SS Rey Quinones, cash considerations and multiple PTBNL to Seattle in exchange for SS Spike Owen and OF Dave Henderson. On September 25, 1986, the Red Sox sent a final PTBNL, OF John Christensen to Seattle to complete the deal.
  • August 26, 1987: Sent to the Baltimore Orioles by the Seattle Mariners as a player to be named later in a trade completed on August 11, 1987. In that trade, the Orioles sent OF Nelson Simmons to the Mariners for a PTBNL.
  • October 15, 1987: Granted Free Agency.
