Overall Career
Mathias John "Matt" Zieser pitched two games in relief for the 1914 Red Sox -- a 6-1 loss in Washington on April 27 and a 6-2 loss to the Yankees at Fenway Park on May 11 -- finishing both. Despite walking 8 with 9 hits and no strikeouts, the righthander gave up just 2 earned runs in 10 innings (1.80 ERA). Following his two-week big league stint, the 25-year-old spitballer would return to the Lowell Grays of the New England League. He would never make it back to the majors.
A Chicago native, he died there on June 10, 1942, at age 53. He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.
