Overall Career

Manny Alexander was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent on February 4, 1988, and broke into the big leagues with Baltimore four years later on September 18, 1992. After appearing in just 7 big-league games from 1992-1994, Alexander finally got his big chance in 1995, amassing 242 at-bats (mainly as a second baseman) and compiling a batting line of .236/.299/.318 with 11 stolen bases and 23 RBI. Appearently underwhelmed by Manny's sparkling numbers, the Orioles limited him to 68 at-bats the following year, which clearly hindered his production (.103/.141/.103).

After these two promising seasons with Baltimore, Manny was traded to the New York Mets before the 1997 season, but after just 54 games with the Mets, he was traded again, this time to the Chicago Cubs, on August 14, 1997. In Chicago, Alexander briefly managed to impersonate a competent hitter, compiling a .293/.358/.374 line in 99 ABs while playing second base and shortstop.

After two more forgettable seasons with the Cubs (in which he played 108 and 90 games and batted .227 and .271), Manny was traded to Boston in December of 1999 for outfielder Damon Buford. Alexander spent just one year with the Red Sox, but it was a memorable one. After John Valentin was injured on May 30, 2000, "little Manny"'s role switched from utility infielder to part of the patchwork solution at 3B. He appeared in 63 games at third, 20 at shortstop, 7 at second base, and a truly inexplicable 3 games as the DH.

Life after Jimy wasn't quite the same for Manny Alexander, who spent time in the minor leagues systems of the Yankees, Brewers, and Rangers before finally reappearing in the majors with Texas in 2004 and San Diego in 2005 and 2006. He is currently on the Padres roster.

Manny's overall numbers include a batting line of .232/.284/.326 with 15 HR, 111 RBI, and 37 SB in 572 games.

Alexander's Moments in the Sun

On September 3, 2002, with Donnie Sadler, Scott Hatteberg, and Dante Bichette on base and Kevin Appier on the mound, Manny hit the penultimate home run of his career, a grand slam that gave Pete Schourek a 6-0 first inning lead. The Sox won the game 10-3.

Trivia

  • Alexander pitched 2/3 of an inning on April 19, 1996 against Texas in a nail-biting 26-7 Texas win. Manny allowed 5 runs, including a grand slam by Kevin Elster.
  • Boston clubhouse attendant Carlos Cowart was pulled over while driving a Mercedez-Benz lent to him by Manny Alexander, and a routine search of the car yielded steroids and syringes in the glove compartment. This led some fans to suggest that Manny might try a higher dosage, given his "infield pop-up power".
