Thomas James "Long Tom" Hughes was born on November 29, 1878, in Chicago, Illinois. Hughes was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 7, 1900, with Chicago.
Hughes completed 32 starts as a Cubs rookie while striking out 225, the third-best NL rookie total ever. In 1903 helped the Red Sox to the first World Series with a 20-7, 2.57 mark as their third starter. Overall, Hughes had an 13-year career as a right handed pitcher. His finished with 131 wins, 1368 Ks, 16 saves, and an ERA of 3.09 in 2644.0 IP.
