Sox and Lexington
The Nebraska State League was revived in 1956, and the Red Sox placed a team in the tiny city (Population: 5000) of Lexington. It would prove to be a successful marriage, as the team won the League in their first season. In its second season, the Red Sox would be in contention all season, losing by a half game (playing one more game than the League Champions). The 1958 team would not fare as well, finishing 3 games under .500.
Only one major league player ever played in Lexington. Bill Spanswick had a dominant 1958 season in Nebraska. On August 21st, he struck out 22 and gave up a single hit in a 13-0 win. Earlier, he pitched all 14 innings in a game, striking out 24. He led the league with 142 strikeouts.
Lexington was starting to lose money, as the new novelty of television had cut attendance by half in 1958. Lexington dropped out of the league after 1958, and the Red Sox left with them. The League would only play one more season before disbanding.
