Kevin Forrest Cash (born December 6, 1977 in Tampa, Florida) is George Kottaras' backup at Pawtucket. He signed a minor league contract with Boston in January 2007. When Doug Mirabelli was injured in the first game of a double header on August 17, 2007, Cash was flown in from Ottawa to back up Jason Varitek. In 2008 he became the regular backup catcher and Tim Wakefield's personal catcher.

Overall Career

A 1999 free agent signing by Toronto, Kevin Cash appeared in a total of 101 games for the Blue Jays from 2002 to 2004. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2004 offseason. A good defensive catcher with a strong arm, Cash has struggled to hit major league pitching, hitting .172/.221/.274 in 332 at-bats with 7 home runs, 13 doubles and 31 RBI. The Boston Red Sox signed him to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training on January 24, 2007. He made his PawSox debut on April 6 hitting a ninth inning solo homer off Charlotte Knights pitcher Ryan Bukvich.

Cash's Moment in the Sun

  • June 9, 2006: Earned the win in his only pitching appearance, tossing a perfect 14th inning for Triple-A Durham in their 6-5 victory over Norfolk.

Trivia

  • Member of the Tampa Northside Little League team that advanced to the 1989 Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
  • Member of the 1999 Cape Cod League All-Star team. That same year he was voted as the Falmouth Commodores MVP.
  • Participated in the 2002 Futures Game during All-Star Weekend, playing for the United States team.
