Overall Career
Jose Santiago (born August 15, 1940 in Juana Diaz, P.R.) pitched both as a starter and as a reliever for the Red Sox. His career was a bit odd in that he never really settled in as a starter or a reliver. After starting only 8 games in 3 years with the A's, Santiago started 28 games and relieved in 7 in 1966. In '67 he started 11 games and relieved in 39, in '68 he started all 18 games he played. After '68, he did not start again for the Red Sox-- injuries limited him to 10 relief apperances in '69 and only 8 in '70.
Awards
- 1968 American League All-Star
Moment In The Sun
Red Sox fans remember Jose best for his preformances in the 1967 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Unfortunately for Jose (and the Red Sox) both of those games were started by Cardinals ace/ playoff hero Bob Gibson.
Game one (in Boston) feautred a pitching duel between Santiago and Gibson, which Gibson won 2-1. The lone Red Sox run came on Santiago's solo home run.
Game four (in St. Louis) was less memorable, as Gibson was untouchable and Santiago was not; Gibson spun a 5 hit gem to beat the Red Sox 6-0.
Santiago was in line to pitch game 7, but was passed over in favor of Jim Lomberg. The Sox lost the game 7-2, and the series 3-4.
