Overall Career

John Hattig was drafted by the Red Sox in the 25th Round of the 1998 Amateur Draft, and started his playing career with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox the following year. Hattig would progress to the Lowell Spinners for the 2000 season, and to the Augusta Greenjackets in 2001.

John would start the season in Augusta again for the 2002, and would put up .282/.377/.401 line to win the Red Sox organization's player of the year for the Greenjackets. John would get a late season promotion to the Sarasota Red Sox in 2002, and started in Florida for the 2003 season. He would repeat his 2002 feat, hitting .294/.385/.421 for the Sarasox to win the 2003 POY for Sarasota, earning a late season promotion to the Portland Sea Dogs.

2004 would prove to be John's best minor league season, as he was well on his way to repeating his POY feat for the third consecutive season. John put up a .295/.411/.519 line for Portland in the first half of the season. However, Boston was in the midst of the pennant race and needed bullpen arms, so on July 24th, he was sent to the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade for Terry Adams. He would move south to the Toronto AA affiliate in New Hampshire, and would put up a line of .296/.352/.556 for the remainder of the season.

John was injured for much of the 2005 season, putting up a .316/.387/.421 line in 26 games in AAA Syracuse. His injuries healed, he put up a .274/.341/.395 line in Syracuse in 2006. On August 17, 2006, the Blue Jays would trade Eric Hinske to the Red Sox. Toronto would go on to promote John Hattig to the majors, replacing Hinske on the active roster.
