Overall Career
Drafted by Detroit in the 19th round of the 1989 amateur draft, Doherty made a promising start to his career. He posted a career low 3.88 ERA with 7 wins in his rookie campaign, followed by career highs in wins (14), innings pitched (184.2) and strikeouts (63) in 1993. After disappointing seasons in 1994 and 1995, Doherty was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox on March 25, 1996. Lit up in his first three outings for Boston, Doherty split the rest of the season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Pawtucket.

Doherty's Moments in the Sun
- June 8, 1992: Doherty is best remembered in Detroit for being on the receiving end of a leaping karate kick from Sandy Alomar Jr. in a game at Tiger Stadium. With the Tigers leading 8-1, Doherty hit Glenallen Hill to start the sixth inning. When he nearly hit Alomar with the next pitch, Alomar charged the mound and kicked Doherty in the abdomen as both benches emptied. Doherty was suspended for four games for his involvement.
