Overall Career

James Charles Walsh was born on September 22, 1885 in Kallila, Ireland. After immigrating to Syracuse at the age of six, Walsh broke into the big leagues on August 26, 1912 as a 26 year old with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Walsh played two seasons with the Boston Red Sox in 1916 and 1917, hitting .257 in 71 games. In a 6-year major league career as an outfielder, Walsh batted .232 with 410 hits, 6 home runs and 150 RBI in 514 games.

After military service in 1918, Walsh bounced around the minor leagues playing for Seattle, Akron, Newark, Jersey City, Baltimore, Toronto, Syracuse, Hartford and Fairmont. In 1925 and 1926, he played for the Buffalo Bisons, winning the league's batting title both years. He continued playing minor league ball until the age of 45. In his 25-year minor league career, Walsh hit .316 with 2,696 hits in 2,385 games.

Walsh died in 1962 at age 76 following a heart attack on golf course.

  • 1958: Inducted into International League Hall of Fame.
  • 1990: Inducted posthumously into Buffalo Bisons Hall of Fame.
  • 2002: Inducted posthumously into the Syracuse Baseball Wall of Fame.

Trivia

  • Recorded the first out of a triple play on July 28, 1914 as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics.
  • Once teamed with Eddie Collins to work two double-squeeze plays in one game.
  • The only Irish-born player to play for the Boston Red Sox.
  • Had very small feet and wore a size 5 baseball shoe.
  • Jimmy is the uncle of former Syracuse mayor William Walsh and great-uncle of Congressman James T Walsh.
