Overall Career
James Edward "Scoops" Cooney was born on August 24, 1894, in Cranston, RI. Cooney was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 22, 1917, with the Boston Red Sox.
Cooney had a 7-year career as a short stop. In 448 games he batted .262 with 413 hits, 2 HR and 150 RBI. He was a slick-fielder, but had trouble holding a ML job because of his weak bat. He was the son of Jimmy Cooney Sr., an 1890s NL shortstop, and his younger brother Johnny Cooney was a outfielder/pitcher for 20 years.
