Overall Career

Pag signed for a $70,000 bonus with the Red Sox. After two years as Boston's regular catcher, he was traded, along with pitcher Don Schwall to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Dick Stuart and Jack Lamabe.

In 1965 he set a Pirate record for homers by a catcher (17) while leading NL catchers in double plays (14) and fielding percentage (.997).

Moment in the Sun

June 18, 1961: The Red Sox pull off one of their greatest rallies in team history, against Washington as they come back from a 12–5 deficit with one out in the 9th to win, 13–12. Willie Tasby of the Senators and Jim Pagliaroni of the Red Sox swap grand slams in the 9th inning of the lid-lifter at Fenway Park, tying the major-league record for slams by two teams in one inning. It is Pagliaroni's 3rd dinger in two days.

Trivia

  • The first person to congratulate Ted Williams after homering in his final at-bat
  • Quote from Ball Four by Jim Bouton..... "Jim Pagliaroni joined the club tonight and is going to be a welcome addition. He was describing a girl that one of the ballplayers had been out with and said, 'It's hard to say exactly what she looked like. She was kind of a Joe Torre with tits.' This joke can only be explained with a picture of Joe Torre. But I’m not sure any exist. He dissolves camera lenses."
