Overall Career
Jesus Pena was born on March 8, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a free agent in 1993 and pitched for three seasons in the Pirates' minor league system. In 1996, Pena was left unprotected in the minor league rule 5 draft, and he was picked up by the Chicago White Sox. Pena was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 7, 1999, with the Chicago White Sox. During the 1999 season, Pena made 26 appearances spanning 20 1/3 innings, and he allowed 21 hits, 23(!) walks, and 12 earned runs. The following season, Chicago inexplicably allowed him to reappear on the White Sox roster, and he worked his magic once again, allowing 25 hits and 16 walks in 23 1/3 innings for a nifty 5.40 ERA.
Naturally, Boston couldn't resist swiping up such a talent, and they traded Mike Rupp to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for the talented lefty. Pena would contribute three innings of quality pitching, allowing 3 hits, 3 walks, and 1 earned run before the end of the 2000 season. Pena spent the 2001 season in Boston's minor league system. After being granted free agency, Pena signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in December 2001, but he was traded to the Texas Rangers before the 2002 season began. After a season in Texas's system, Pena wisely chose to pitch in Colorado Springs (the Colorado Rockies' Triple-A club), where his 15 hits and 9 walks in 12 innings undoubtedly endeared him to the local fans. He appears to have been out of baseball since 2003.
In a 2-year major league career as a left handed relief pitcher, Pena made a total of 48 appearances and had 2 wins, 1 save, 40 Ks, and a 5.21 ERA in 46.2 IP. He allowed 49 hits and 42 walks over that span.
