Jesse Niles "Powder" Tannehill was born on July 14, 1874, in Dayton, Kentucky. Tannehill was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on June 17, 1894, with the Cincinnati Reds.
Tannehill won 20 or more games six times; his 20-6 record for the Pirates in 1900 gave him the league's best winning percentage (.769). He had an 5-year career as an outfielder and left handed pitcher. He pitched a total of 358 games with 197 wins, 940 Ks, and a 2.79 ERA in 2750.1 IP. At the plate, he had a .256 average, 5 HRs, and 141 RBI. He also managed the Boston Red Sox in 1907.
