Overall Career

An eighth round pick in the 1982 amateur draft, Sellers put together a breakout season with the New Britain Red Sox in 1985, leading the Eastern League with 15 complete games, 5 shutouts, and tied for the lead in wins with 14. He was rewarded with a late-season call-up to Boston at the tender age of 21.

An erratic power pitcher, Sellers showed flashes of promise in his four seasons with Boston, but the combination of a disappointing season in 1988, in which he posted a 1-7 record, and a shoulder injury, led to an off-season trade to the Cincinnati Reds.

Sellers's Moments in the Sun

  • September 1, 1987: Sellers tosses a complete-game shutout victory over the AL West-leading Minnesota Twins. [1]
  • October 1, 1988: Sellers no-hits the Cleveland Indians for seven and a third innings before Luis Medina homers and Cleveland goes on to win 1-0. John Farrell wins his 14th for Cleveland. [2]

Trivia

  • Once pitched 11 innings against the Brewers but received a no-decision.
  • Jeff's son, Justin, a 2B/SS out of Cal State-Fullerton, was a 6th-round pick (#191 overall) of the Oakland Athletics in the 2005 amateur draft.
