Overall Career
Jack Erwin Russell was born on October 24, 1905, in Paris, Texas. Russell was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 5, 1926, with the Boston Red Sox. Jack played six full seasons (and a partial season in 1932) with the Sox, prior to be traded to the Washington Senators. As with the majority of pitchers of the poor '20s era Red Sox, he would never earn a winning season for the Sox, and would lead the league in losses in 1930 (an honor he shared with teamate Milt Gaston). His record for Boston was 41-85 with an ERA of 4.54.
Russell had a 15-year career as a right handed pitcher. He finished with a 85-141 record, 38 saves, and a 4.46 ERA in 2,050 2/3 innings. He was converted from a starter to a reliever when he joined Washington in 1933, and he responded by leading the AL with 13 saves and 11 relief wins. Russell's 54 appearances and seven relief victories were league highs in 1934, as he became the first reliever named to the AL All-Star squad. After retiring, he settled in Clearwater, Florida, and became City Commissioner. He helped put through the construction of a new spring training stadium, named after him, for the Phillies.
