Hugh Carpenter Bedient was born on October 23, 1889, in Gerry, NY. Bedient was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 26, 1912, with the Boston Red Sox.

Bedient had a 4-year career as a right handed pitcher. He finished with a 59-53 record, 420 Ks and a 3.08 ERA in 936.2 IP. Bedient won 20 games as a Red Sox rookie in 1912 and another in the World Series when he outpitched Christy Mathewson 2-1 in the fifth game. He also pitched the first seven innings of the final game, won by the Red Sox in the 10th.
