Overall Career
Grover Allen "Slick" Hartley was born on July 2, 1888, in Osgood, Indiana. Hartley was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 13, 1911, with the New York Giants.
Hartley had a 14-year career as a back-up catcher. In 569 games he batted .268 with 3 HR and 144 RBI. Hartley's only year as a regular came in 1915 with St. Louis of the Federal League. He was a minor league manager and a coach with the Browns and Pirates. In 1935 Hartley became an American League umpire.
