George Shelby Smith was born on October 27, 1901, in Louisville, Kentucky. Smith was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 21, 1926, with the Detroit Tigers. Smith had a 5-year career as a right handed pitcher. He finished with a record of 10-8, with 135 Ks and a 5.28 ERA in 330.2 innings.
A reliever in all but 7 of his 132 career appearances at a time when that was an uncommon specialization, Smith's best season came in 1927 (4-1, 3.91).
