Overall Career

George Lombard (born September 14, 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia), was drafted by his hometown Atlanta Braves in the 2nd round (62nd overall) of the 1994 amateur draft. He made his debut with the Braves September 4th, 1998 stealing a base in his first game. George spent 3 seasons with the braves getting into only 39 games before being traded to the Detroit Tigers in June of 2002 for Kris Keller. In his one season with Detroit the left handed hitting outfielder played a career high 72 games, hitting .241 with 5 round trippers and 13 batted in while stealing 13 bases. In March of 2003 the Tampa Bay Devil Rays claimed George off waivers from the Tigers. He played only 13 games in Tampa Bay before becoming a free agent following the 2003 season.

George spent the next two seasons playing at Boston's AAA affiliate Pawtucket Red Sox and AA Portland, never getting into a game with the parent squad. Following the 2005 season George signed with the Washington Nationals. In 2006 George made is first trip since 2003 to the majors, getting into 20 games with the Nationals but only amassing 3 hits. George has enjoyed 13 years in professional baseball but has never had an uniterrupted major league season without spending time in the minors. In 13 minor league seasons George has appeared in 1,126 minor league games with a batting average of .262 belting 136 home runs driving in 511 runs, and stealing 303 bases. In 6 major league seasons he has played in only 144 games hitting .220 with 8 home runs, 21 rbis and 23 steals.

Trivia

  • George Lombard was also a football standout at Atlanta's Lovett School and signed a football scholarship as a running back with the University of Georgia and was considered one of UGAs top recruits at the time. He never played football though instead opting to play pro baseball after being drafted, and handed a big bonus, by his hometown Atlanta Braves.
