Scouting Report
- A native Canadian grabbed out of junior college as a 20th-round pick as a draft-and-follow, Kottaras showed a precocious batting eye, intriguing doubles power and great defensive instincts behind the plate. The Padres compare him to Brad Ausmus with the glove, Jorge Posada with the bat. ~ Baseball Prospectus
- I think he projects as a .260-.285 hitter in the majors, with 10-15 homers a season and a nice on base percentage. Kottaras has a strong arm and good mobility behind the plate, although his footwork can be a problem sometimes, inhibiting his throwing. Still, his glove is good enough for him to start if he hits as expected. Grade B+ ~ John Sickels
- Kottaras’ bat separates him from the rest of San Diego’s catching prospects. He’ll begin 2006 back in Double-A and is on schedule to be the starter at the big league level by the end of 2007. ~ Baseball America
- Offensive-minded catcher with 15 home run power potential and very good plate discipline. His patience at the plate has led to leaving his bat on his shoulder a bit too much. Strong arm with average accuracy, but Kottaras lacks quickness in his release when throwing runners out. Average glove. Scouts claim that his catching flaws are correctable. Could stand to add a little bit of bulk. Has experience catching knuckleballer Steve Sparks. ~ SoxProspects.com
