Overall Career

Gary Lee Waslewski (born July 21, 1941 in Meriden, Connecticut) was a right-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. He compiled a 6-9 record with a 3.54 ERA in 147.1 innings for the Red Sox in 1967 and 1968.

After a trade sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals, Waslewski played four more seasons in the majors before retiring as an active player in 1972. He finished with a career record of 11-26 and a 3.44 ERA and 229 strikeouts in 410.1 innings pitched.

Waslewski's Moment in the Sun

  • October 11, 1967: Waslewski's moment of glory came in Game Six of the 1967 World Series, when he gave Boston five-plus solid innings (getting a no-decision because of the bullpen) as they went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4. The rookie went 2-2 after being called up that year; it was the only non-losing record of his career. [1]

Trivia

  • Waslewski was only the third rookie pitcher to start for a team that trailed 3-games-to-2 in a best-of-7 postseason series.
  • Battled rheumatic fever, a collapsed lung and a heart murmur.
