Overall Career
Sanchez was drafted by the Red Sox in the 11th round in 2000. In 3 years with the organization, he appeared in 32 games with the Red Sox, collecting 11 hits in 50 plate appearances.
In June of 2003, the Red Sox traded Sanchez to the Pirates, along with Mike Gonzalez, for Jeff Suppan, Brandon Lyon, and Anastacio Martinez. In 2005, Sanchez became a full-time starter in Pittsburgh.
2006 was a career year for Freddy. After starting the season as Joe Randa's backup, Freddy seized his opportunity when Randa went down with an injury early, posting career highs in almost every major offensive category, including an NL best .344 batting average.
Sanchez started 2007 on the disabled list after injuring his right knee in a home plate collision with Rod Barajas in spring training. Since returning to the team, Freddy has made the transition to second base, replacing Jose Castillo, and was named to his second consecutive All-Star team.

- January 12, 2007: Freddy's high school jersey #21 is retired as part of "Freddy Sanchez Day" in Burbank, California.
- In 2006, Sanchez became the first Pirate to lead the league in average at the All-Star break since Al Oliver in 1976. Sanchez also became the only player other than Paul Waner to reach 50 doubles in the entire history of the Pirates.
