Fred "Bootnose" Hofmann was born on June 10, 1894, in St. Louis, Missouri. Hofmann was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 26, 1919, with the New York Yankees. Hofmann had a 9-year career as a catched with the Yankees and Red Sox. In 378 games he batted .247 with 7 HR and 93 RBI.
Hofmann's 36 years in organized baseball started as the Yankees' backup catcher at the beginning of their dynasty. He was a pennant-winning minor league manager and coached 12 years for the Browns. When the team moved to Baltimore, he went along as a scout.
