Career Overview

Wilson was originally signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Twins in 1992. He climbed the minor league ladder fairly quickly despite being traded twice twice, making his major league debut for the Indians in 1997 at age 24. After spending most of 1998 in the minors, he spent all of 1999 with the big club, recording the most playing time of his career to date. In the following years, he settled into a utility or part-time role for the Pirates, Yankees and Cubs. In early 2002, it was discovered that he was actually two years older than his listed age. His hitting numbers began to decline in this period, with the lowlights being OPSs of 534, 639, and 579 for bad Yankees' benches from 2002-04. Finally, even his veteran aura was not enough to get him a guaranteed job, so he has settled as a depth infielder for the Red Sox, employer of his good friend Manny Ramirez.

2006

With the release of Rodney Nye, Wilson has less competition for playing time in the Pawtucket infield. Still, with the presence of superior infielders like Dustin Pedroia and the fact that Alejandro Machado is on the 40-man roster, his chances of returning to the majors with Boston appear to be slim.

Wilson's Moments in the Sun

  • Wison has surprisingly very good numbers off of ace pitcher Pedro Martinez, one of the best pitchers in the game.
