Elmer John Smith was born on September 21, 1892, in Sandusky, Ohio. Smith was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 20, 1914, with the Cleveland Naps.
Smith had a 10-year career as an outfielder. In 1,012 games he batted .276 with 70 HR and 541 RBI. He appeared in the 1920 and 1922 World Series. Smith had his best year with the 1920 World Champion Indians, hitting .316, with 12 home runs and 103 RBI.
