Overall Career

Edgar Renteria was signed by the Florida Marlins as an amateur free agent in 1992. He rose quickly through the Florida system, becoming a regular at the age of 20 in 1996. He quickly established himself as one of the better shortstops in the National League, selected be an all-star in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2006. Though not a power-hitting shortstop, he's an effective hitter - averaging .289 throughout his career (as of 2007) with a career high of .330 in 2003. A good baserunner, he averaged about 30 steals a year until his late 20's. Though scrutinized for his lackluster defensive plays in Boston during 2005, he was regarded as one of the better defensive shortstops in the National League, winning gold gloves in both 2003 and 2004. Leaving Boston after a disappointing 2005 season, he quickly regained his form as one of the elite shortstops in the NL, more than halving his previous error total and returning to career offensive norms.

  • Member of the World Series Champion Florida Marlins in 1997
  • His 82 RBIs in 2002 are the most by a Cardinal shortstop since Doc Lavan's 82 in 1921.
  • Led the Majors with 30 errors in 2005
