Bert Edgar Chapman was born on September 25, 1893, in Pelzer, South Carolina. Chaplin was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 4, 1920, with the Boston Red Sox.
Chaplin had a 3-year career as a Boston back-up catcher. In 35 games he batted .184 with 0 HR and 7 RBI. His most productive season came in 1922 when he hit .188 with 2 doubles, a triple and six runs batted in. He also stole two bases in three attempts.
