Scouting Report
- Brown is an excellent defensive catcher with an exceptionally strong arm. Works well with the pitchers and calls a solid game. Decent bat, gap power and average to above average plate discipline. Somewhat of a streaky hitter. Well built, strong lower body. Athletic for a catcher, but still not going to be a threat on the basepaths. Tough as nails. Brown has the makings of a great backup catcher at the MLB level, and if he can keep improving with the bat, might even get a start at some point. ~ SoxProspects.com
- Average-sized catcher with good plate discipline and decent speed. Minimal power. Splitting time in Augusta in 2003 didn't help his cause. Good catching skills, good arm. Walks a good amount but strikes out too much.
Minor League Career
2006: A strained right hamstring limited Brown to 85 appearances for Portland in 2006. In 79 games behind the plate, Dusty posted a .986 fielding percentage as a catcher, committing 9 errors and 10 passed balls. At the plate, Dusty hit just .224/.284/.332 with 17 doubles, 5 home runs, 40 RBI and 32 runs scored. His troubles with right-handed pitchers continued as he hit .186 against righties compared to .297 against lefties. The highlight of Dusty's season came during Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship Series at Akron when his ninth-inning three-run double capped a 13-8 Sea Dogs victory.
2005: Batted .256 with a career-high 8 homers and 36 RBI in an injury-shortened season for Single-A Wilmington, where Brown missed 2 months from early May to early July. His 8 homers were double the 4 home runs he had hit in his 4 seasons of minor league ball entering 2005. Brown also scored a career-best 32 runs scored in `05. Dustin played 34 games in the outfield and caught 29 games after combining to catch 98 games from 2003-04 compared to 9 appearances in the outfield. Brown batted .301 vs. lefties and just .222 vs. righties.
