Overall Career

A graduate of the University of Tennessee Dental School, Prothro was discovered by ex-Washington left-hander Joe Engel, while playing shortstop for the town team. After appearing in six games for the Senators at the end of the 1920 season, batting .385, Washington wanted to send him to Reading (International) the following spring, but he refused to report, returning instead to his dental practice. The Senators bought him back in 1924, batting .333 in 46 games before losing his third base job to the better fielding Ossie Bluege.

The Red Sox acquired Prothro on December 11, 1924 in a trade that sent Mike McNally to Washington. Prothro went on to appear in a career-high 119 games for Boston in 1925, hitting .313/.390/.383. He ended his playing days with 3 games for the Cincinnati Reds in 1926.

In 180 games he batted .318 with 0 HR and 81 RBI. After his playing days, he managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1939 to 1941. He lead the Phillies to three successive last-place finishes in 1939-41. Before managing the Phillies, he was the manager for the Little Rock Travelers from 1935 to 1938, and was player/manager for the Memphis Chickashaws 1928-1934. After the Phillies, he returned to Memphis as manager and part owner until 1947.
