Richard James McCabe was born on February 21, 1896, in Mamaroneck, NY. McCabe was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 30, 1918, with the Boston Red Sox.
McCabe had a 2-year career as a right handed pitcher, pitching in a total of 6 games. He finished with a 1-1 record, and 3.46 ERA. McCabe debuted in the Connecticut League in 1914 and was signed by Boston. He spent the following season with Lynn, MA, but was injured for most of 1916. McCabe went 15-13 for Buffalo in the 1917 International League.
During the early part of 1918, McCabe was Boston's primary batting practice pitcher. In 1920, McCabe was 22-6 with a 2.22 ERA for Buffalo and returned to the big leagues for three games with the Chicago White Sox in 1922. He continued playing in the minor leagues until 1933. His minor league career numbers over twenty years: 259-212, 3.64 ERA.
