Overall Career

Signed by the Red Sox in 1950, Gernert hit 19 home runs as a Boston rookie in 1952 and a career-high 21 as a sophomore. Somewhat of a butcher in the field, Gernert amassed a further 61 homers between 1954 and 1959 before a trade sent him to the Chicago Cubs for Jim Marshall and Dave Hillman. He finished his career with brief stops in Detroit, Cincinnati and Houston, used mainly as a backup. While with Cincinnati, Gernert pinch hit four times for the Reds in the 1961 World Series.

In 11 seasons, Gernert hit .254./.351/.426 with 103 home runs, 104 doubles, 363 walks, 462 strikeouts and 402 RBI.
