Overall Career
Dennis Ray “Oil Can” Boyd (born October 6, 1959 in Meridian, MS), was a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox over parts of 8 seasons. Boyd also pitched for the Montreal Expos, Texas Rangers, and made a short-lived comeback at the age of 45 with the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League. Boyd was given the nickname “Oil Can” by then teammate Dennis Eckersley, in response to his propensity for drinking. Other reports say that Boyd's nickname comes from his beer-drinking days in his hometown, where beer is referred to as "oil."
