Analysis

14th Highest Salary on the Red Sox at $2M for 2003

On the surface Giambi's 2003 season with the Red Sox was a full bust. Giambi was a single seaons player for the Red Sox and after he was released he never played again in the majors.

Giambi was Theo's 2nd transaction of note since he was hired and it is easy to see why Giambi appeared to be an attractive low cost player. In his 2002 season (split between OAK and PHI) Giambi put up career numbers in catagories that were known to matter to the new Front Office. Also worth noting is that Giambi had relatively decent success against the MFY in the playoffs (see 3rd table) although these results are taken from a fairly small sample size.

Giambi was nothing more than an attempt at Theo hitting a homerun at a relatively small cost.

SoSH Reaction

A couple of quotes from the Old SoSH Forum sum up Theo's "flash in a pan" mentality nicely.

Philly Sox Fan
When those players hit big you get great seasons for peanuts (Mueller and Ortiz in 03) and easy praise as a genius. When those players bust (like Giambi, Mendoza) they disappear easily.
Kevin Mortons Ghost
Theo's success with the Muellers and Ortizs make it a lot easier for the Giambis amd Mendozas to disappear. In fact, one might say that Theo's success with the overall team make it a lot easier for those guys to disappear.

Josh Hancock

Analysis

Drafted in 1998 in the 5th round of the amateur draft Hancock broke into the majors with the Red Sox in 2002. Over his 5 year career he has appeared in 94 Games while starting only 12. He has a 9-6 overall record in 165 IP and has been averaging a WHIP of 1.303. In 2006 Hancock earned the notorious distinction of being 1 of only 2 players for STL to be on the 2006 World Series 25-man roster who did not appear in a single game that series.

Hancock has done nothing special with his career so far but has been given (earned didnt seem to fit here) a World Series ring for his efforts. At 28 years of age Hancock could be out of the league in a couple of years or he could hang on to his journeyman pitcher status.
