A New England native, Dave Wallace served as the pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox from 2003-2006. He joined the Sox in June 2003 when Tony Cloninger took a medical leave of absence to fight cancer. At the time of his appointment, Wallace served as the Senior Vice President/Baseball Operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had previously worked with the Dodgers as a pitching coach (1995-1997) and was named interim GM during the 2001 season. He also served as pitching coach for the New York Mets and as a senior adviser to GM Steve Phillips.
A life-threatening hip infection caused him to miss the first four months of the 2006 season. In his absence, Al Nipper was named interim pitching coach. After undergoing hip replacement surgery in June, Wallace resumed his duties as the Red Sox pitching coach on August 8, 2006.
On October 2, 2006, the Red Sox announced that Wallace's contract would not be renewed. The Houston Astros named Wallace as their new pitching coach on November 14, 2006.
