Overall Career

Dave Valle (born October 30, 1960 in Bayside, New York) was a catcher who spent the majority of his 13 year playing career with the Seattle Mariners. He was drafted in the second round of the 1978 Amateur Draft by the Mariners, who selected him out of Holy Cross High School in Flushing, New York. He played part of the 1994 season with the Red Sox, appearing in 30 games while hitting .158/.256/.250 for the Olde Town Team. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in June 1994 for Tom Brunansky, before ending his career with the Texas Rangers from 1995 to 1996 as the back up to Ivan Rodriguez. The batting line for his 13 year major league career was .237/.314/.373, adding in 77 career homeruns.

Valle's Moment in the Sun

  • April 12, 1994: Valle's only home run in a Red Sox uniform came off Royals starter Kevin Appier in a 22-11 Boston win.

Trivia

  • Valle pitched one inning in 1978 as a 19 year old in the California League. He allowed one hit and two walks, but struck out two and did not allowed an earned run. In addition to his 0.00 ERA, his WHIP of 3.00 would make Rudy Seanez blush.
  • Led the American League in hit by pitches (17) in 1993.
  • Served as a color commentator for Seattle Mariners broadcasts through the 2006 season.
  • Founded Esperanza International in 1995, an organization that grants small loans to Dominicans who want to start up or expand a business.
