Overall Career
Signed as a free agent in 1961, Morehead broke into the Red Sox starting rotation as a 20-year-old rookie in 1963, shutting out the Washington Senators in his major league debut on April 13. A month later, Morehead shined again as he pitched a one-hitter against the same Senators, the lone hit coming on a Chuck Hinton home run. He finished his rookie campaign with a 10-13 record and 3.81 ERA in 174.2 innings.
In 1965, on a Red Sox team that ended the year with 100 losses, Morehead matched his career high in wins but tied with fellow Red Sox starter Bill Monbouquette and Kansas City's John O'Donoghue for the league lead with 18 losses.
Bothered by arm troubles that limited him to 33 games pitched, Morehead won only 7 more games for Boston over the next three seasons, but did contribute five victories to the 1967 pennant winning Red Sox.
His Red Sox career came to an end when the Kansas City Royals selected him as the 15th pick in the 1968 expansion draft. Morehead would go on to appear in 21 games for the Royals in 1969 and posted a 3.62 ERA in 28 games in 1970, his final season in the big leagues.
Morehead's Moment in the Sun
- September 16, 1965: In an otherwise disappointing season, Morehead provided a momentary jolt of excitement when he no-hit the Cleveland Indians 2-0 before only 1,247 fans at Fenway Park, allowing just a second-inning walk to Rocky Colavito. Afterwards, owner Tom Yawkey rewrites Morehead’s contract giving him a $1,000 bonus.
Trivia
- Morehead was the first Red Sox pitcher to debut with a shutout since Boo Ferriss in 1945.
