Overall Career
David Michael Hollins was born on May 25, 1966, in Buffalo, New York. Hollins was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 12, 1990, with the Philadelphia Phillies. The switch-hitting third baseman hit safely in his major league debut, and became the first Phillie to connect for pinch-hit homers from both sides of the plate. Dave's progression continued in 1991, with a .298 batting average with the Phils.
Dave's breakout season came in 1992, with a .270 average, 27 homers, 93 RBI, and 104 runs scored. The following season, Hollins, an All-Star selection, drove in another 93 runs, a career-high 30 doubles, and once again scored over 100 runs (the first Philly since Juan Samuel in 1985 to accomplish that feat in consecutive seasons).
Adversity struck in 1994-95, with a series of debilitating wrist injuries and a diagnosis of diabetes. Hollins battled back achieve one of his finest seasons with the Anaheim Angels in 1997: a career-high .288 average, 165 hits, 29 doubles, 16 homers, 85 RBI, and 16 stolen bases.
Hollins spent the 2005 season as the hitting coach for the Binghamton Mets, and is now a scout for the Baltimore Orioles. He has continued ties with the Philadelphia Phillies, playing in their Fantasy Baseball Camp in Florida in 2006.
