Professional Career

Haigwood, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound lefty, was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 16th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft. After missing the entire 2003 season with an ACL tear, he spent 2004 at Single-A Kannapolis compiling a 10-4 record with a 4.76 ERA, 99 strikeouts, 56 walks and 97 hits in 113.1 innings. He put up impressive numbers at Double-A Birmingham in 2005 ending the season 6-1 with a 1.74 ERA, 76 strikeouts and no home runs allowed in 67.1 innings.

The White Sox traded Haigwood to the Philadelphia Phillies with Aaron Rowand and a player to be named later (Gio Gonzalez) in November 2005 for slugger Jim Thome. Having appeared in just 15 games at Double-A Reading, Haigwood was traded again, this time to Texas for lefthander Fabio Castro on June 29, 2006. He finished the season with a combined record of 3-7 with a 3.58 ERA, 86 walks and 142 strikeouts in 146 innings between Double-A Reading and Double-A Frisco.

The Boston Red Sox acquired Haigwood on April 19, 2007 in exchange for Scott Shoemaker and cash considerations. He was added to Boston's 40-man roster and put on the temporary inactive list and sent to Extended Spring Training in Fort Myers, Florida.

Haigwood made two starts for the rookie-level GCL Red Sox in April 2007, giving up just 1 ER on 6 hits in 7.1 with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. Promoted to Double-A Portland, he debuted with 4 scoreless innings against the Trenton Thunder, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strike outs. However after logging a 3.85 ERA and a 2.85 K/BB ratio in his first 6 starts through June 1, a pulled left groin affected his control and forced him to the DL twice -- including a 35-day stint where he missed the entire month of August. In his final 10 starts of the regular season, his ERA was 6.86 with a .944 K/BB. Haigwood also made two scoreless relief appearances including a 2.2-inning outing against Trenton in the Eastern League playoffs.

Daniel was one of 7 Sox prospects assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League in 2007. In his first two starts, his struggles continued with a 14.73 ERA, 6 hits and 5 walks in just 3.2 innings. On October 15, Boston designated Haigwood for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired Jay Marshall.

Scouting Report

From Sox Prospects: "Haigwood's arsenal includes a 90-mph fastball, a curveball, an excellent changeup, and a slurve. Fastball has good movement, and he mixes his off-speed stuff very well. Intelligent with his repertoire. Good against both righties and lefties. Decent major league potential."
