Overall Career
Signed as an undrafted free agent in 1983 by the Boston Red Sox, Williams hit .300 or better at every stop in the Red Sox organization. In 1985, he was named Player of the Year at Double-A New Britain. Two years later, in Pawtucket, Williams hit .327, the highest recorded average by anyone in the system. Despite hitting over .300 in Pawtucket again the following season, he remained in the minors due to the glut of outfielders in Boston.
He finally received his long awaited call-up in June 1989, when Ellis Burks got hurt and Pawtucket manager Ed Nottle persuaded Boston management to give Williams a shot. After eight games with Boston, Williams was sent back to Pawtucket in the middle of July, and traded to the Chicago White Sox on August 2 for Ray Chadwick. He played two years with the White Sox organization, winning the Pacific League title in 1989 with Chicago's Triple-A affiliate in Vancouver, but never returned to the big leagues.
When the Independent Northern League started in 1993, Williams was the first former major league player to sign with the league. He retired in 1995 at age 32. Since his playing days ended, Williams served as hitting coach for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners from 2002-2004. In 2006, he was named manager of the Mariners rookie ball team.
