Overall Career

Dana Ervin Kiecker (born February 25, 1961 in Sleepy Eye, MN), was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 8th Round of the 1983 Amateur Draft out of St. Cloud State. After toiling in the minors for 6+ seasons, Dana was finally called up the the Sox where he debuted on April, 12th 1990. His first appearance came out of the pen, relieving the innaffective combo of Mike Rochford and Wes Gardner against the Detroit Tigers. He would pitch 4 innings that game, giving up 3 runs and striking out 4. He would soon get moved to the starting rotation, as Dana would start 25 games that season. Kieker pitched 152 innings that season, going 8-9 with a 3.97 ERA.

Unfortunately for Dana, it was the beginning of the end. An elbow injury plagued him during the 1991 season, limiting him to only 18 games (5 starts) and 40 innings. Dana would end the season with a 2-3 record and a 7.36 ERA. Dana would go to Spring Training with the Sox in 1992, but was the last player cut. This would be the end of his Major League Career.

Dana went on to join UPS as a full time employee, and is currently a National Accounts Manager. He also is a Color Analyst for the Saint Paul Saints of the Independent American Association.

Kiecker's Moments in the Sun

After a good Rookie Season of 1990, Dana started game 2 of the 1990 ALCS vs the Oakland A's. His opposition: Cy Young Award Winner Bob Welch. Dana left the game after 5 2/3rds innings with the 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, he left an inherited runner which scored to tie the game. More unfortunate, the team would end up losing the game and being swept by the A's.
